Jason Wu’s soft fetish Helmet Newton is like a gift that keeps on giving; a bottomless well of sartorial inspiration. Sometimes the product of a Newton-inspired endeavour falls flat, and sometimes the homage is entirely successful – usually the former is a result of attempted imitation, the latter a result of gifted inspiration. Of Jason Wu’s spring / summer 2013 collection, we’ll file it under the latter. Wu took the underlying fetishism – the black and white, the androgynous tailoring, the physical restraint manifested on the New York fashion week (NYFW) runway as leather harnesses – and gave it all his own spin. A soft and feminine spin. Once again, spring / summer 2013 brought the bandage dress back to the runway with a special touch. This year Herve Leger made a bandages dress with an added flair of American pizazz. Each woman represented a southern woman with a bad boy for a boyfriend, rocking the runway to the sound of motorcycles and marching to the beat of their own drummer. You might not guess it at first glance, but the inspiration was taken from quilt making techniques of the women in Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The inspiration was the futurism and minimalism behind Alexander Wangâs designs. Guido took the modern ponytail that we see day to day on the streets of any city and elevated it to new heights. Throughout his career he has found ways to make the ponytail new all over again – and this New York fashion week show was no exception. If that’s the case than Zac Posen hangs with the likes of Naomi Campbell and Karolina Kurkova, who both walked his runway in addition to regular muses Crystal Renn and Coco Rocha. The red carpet remains a specialty for Zac Posen and there were plenty of gowns in his spring / summer 2013 show at New York fashion week (NYFW) that were simply made for it. A few voluminous explosions of tulle or the closing tiered cream number were a bit on the dramatic side while others draped and folded with a vintage-esque elegance. Potentially it’s just hard not to be smiling when you’re wearing bright limes, sun-drenched corals, and holiday aquamarines. These shots from behind the scenes of von Furstenberg’s spring / summer 2013 collection give a different perspective of the pieces and how they move on the body – as well as just generally drawing you into the mood and happenings of the backstage area. Enhance it. Their spring / summer 2013 runway show at New York fashion week (NYFW) therefor presented no surprises in the way each garment hugged the body like a long-lost friend. That said there was also a relaxed and effortless feel to many of the draped silk pieces, which were allowed an easy moment on the runway before the label’s trademark cutaway sheaths stole the spotlight.
