Women's 2012 Hair Trends
Part I

2012 is almost upon us. That means each and everyone of us will evolve our wardrobes to reflect the new year's looks that we feel most passionate about. It also means we'll evolve our own personal styles beyond the wardrobe - after all, fashion isn't limited to clothes alone.

So as we did with our men's 2012 hair guide, Fashionising.com is putting together a guide to help you with all the women's hair trends for 2012: that means haircuts, hairstyles and hair colours.

You can find the first part of our 2012 women's hair guide in the second half of this newsletter. You'll also find bonus beauty and inspiration pieces.

We'll follow up with the second part of our guide to next year's hair trends in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on your inbox.

First official Gatsby images

It’s still early days for Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby – that classic, Jazz Age, ultimately tragic piece of literary fiction loved by many. Yet with the release of some official photos from the set we get a taster of the fashions to come from the film. In these released shots Carey Mulligan is the quintessential icon of 1920s fashion: bobbed hair, decadent jewels and fur in one shot, a more Deco-looking printed headscarf in another.

Burberry Prorusm’s direction for 2012

Next year looms and, accordingly, we’re not just working to get our heads around the spring / summer 2012 fashion collections that will serve as the year’s first truly new offerings, but also the autumn / fall 2012 collections which will do more to define how we approach 2012′s fashions than anything else. The trouble is that, on this side of the New Year’s Eve divide, few designers are willing to show off their collections for this time next year. What they are willing to do, however, is give us a preview of their offerings for the season that falls between summer and autumn. Can’t think of that season’s name? Neither can we, hence, it’s call the pre-Autumn / Fall season, a season that doesn’t really exist.

While the accepted naming convention might leave a lot to be desired, the collections that fall under its moniker often prove to be of great benefit for those of us interested in a little crystal ball gazing. After all, by right a pre-season collection will offer a glimpse of what the full collection has in store. Hence, in the look book of Burberry Prorusm’s pre-autumn 2012 collection collection that was released today we get not just a glimpse of what designer Christopher Bailey is likely to leave behind in spring / summer, but also a good nod at where he’s likely to take us for the rest of the year.

And where exactly is that?

Miranda’s body bared

There’s been another fundamental shift in the way the fashion world views nudity, and we’ve been noticing it more and more. There was a phase of the naked body being presented as raw and sexual, then it softened from sexual to sensual. Of late more models have posed sans clothing in a display of pure natural beauty that crosses over into the space traditionally populated by artistic nudes. If you wanted a yardstick to measure the flesh with you might look at 2012′s Pirelli calendar – a display of naked, natural and untouched beauty if ever there was one, and a gentle step removed from the Dionysian nudes of Pirelli 2011, which was itself a step very far removed from the raw Terry Richardsonism of Pierlli 2010.

This seems to be just an organic cycle that turns as the wheel of fashion does. And it’s one that makes nudity, now, a celebration of the human form (for want of a less sappy phrase) as opposed to sending any overt messages about sexual freedom or empowerment.

Queens and debutantes: Temperley London

Temperley London always comes steeped with an inherent British elegance and laced with a vintage whimsy; and for pre-fall 2012 the label surpasses itself on both accounts. The elegance hits a note that’s sometimes Queenly, sometimes Debutante, from regal gowns worn with scrunched mid-length gloves to sparkling tiara-like headbands.

And the Britishness? It feels to me like there’s something rather English about wearing a dainty floor-length frock underneath an open trench coat.

Life, distanced from reality

Some models are chosen to fit the concept, and some concepts are born of the model. The latter is when model transcends into muse. Inspired by Lorena, his model and muse on this shoot, Pierre Dal Corso set out to create something sexual but with a sophisticated distance; to capture the ‘animal thing’ possessed by her.

We see Lorena’s naked skin, strong features, deep eyes, yet we’re still at a distance. Not a physical distance but a logical one – as if she’s a subject we’re viewing from behind glass. The glossy, waxy quality of her skin isn’t accidental, it’s Dal Corso’s way of keeping a barrier between Lorena and reality. She’s almost a wax doll, a statue.

Like the taxidermy props that populate the shoot, Lorena, the feeling of being removed from reality, and the very concept of photographs themselves, represent the beauty of life suspended in time.

West side story

Fashion loves its contrasts, and it’s safe to say that toughness and femininity have one of the most passionate – if tumultuous – relationships. When they get on, they get on like a house on fire.

Those two qualities – toughness and femininity – come together in Henryk Lobaczewski‘s latest shoot. Photographed in New York, it’s what characters of West Side Story might look like if you picked them up out of the 1950s and placed them in the now. The rockabilly pompadours, leather jackets, skinny jeans and cigarettes might not change, but now our lead characters are sipping from McDonalds paper cups and covering their quiffs with Alexander McQueen’s skull-stamped headscarves.

Louis Vuitton take their men on a trip

The Louis Vuitton men’s spring 2012 collection was not just a rebirth of the fashion house’s menswear offering under designer Kim Jones, but also an acknowledgement of precisely what LV’s male customer is: wealthy and wont to travel. As I wrote at the time of the spring 2012 showing, the collection struck me as “something of a complete travel wardrobe.” As the release of the collection nears, that travel motif is naturally being realised away from the catwalk, no more so then in Louis Vuitton’s own editorially based promotion of it.

Russh’s eye angles

Featured across both their iPad and print editions, Russh magazine takes gold highlights to the features of model Marique Schimmel for their December / January 2012 edition.

While the gold highlights aren’t exactly the sequin dot makeup from our makeup trends guide, the variation on the theme is still worthy of your makeup bag of tricks nonetheless.

Women's Hair Trends: Part I

Wet look hair: the wet hair you can go outdoors with

Perfectly slick or unceremoniously textured, flowing free or tied up high. A vast number of styles across the spring 2012 runways had one thing in common: they all had a wet-look finish. With oils, sea-sprays and gels aplenty dominating the runways it would be neglectful of us not to count wet look hair amoung the list of 2012 hairstyle trends - and to look at how the style in its many forms can translate to everyday life.

The side part: how to wear it now

The centre might be where hair sits if you want to rock a 60s or 70s vibe in 2012, but for those looking for a part that offers up more of a fashion-forward vibe then your 2012 hairstyle is all about the side part.

Wear it left, right, up, down, wet, dry, when you're in a hurry or taking your time... it matters not. What matters is that in 2012, if you've got the hair to suit the styles, you move your hair part to the side.

All that leaves one question: what hairstyles does the side part work with for 2012? You'll find the answer after the break.

Hair how to: retro faux bob

The trend towards 60s fashion gives us everything from Bardot bouffant bed hair to mod androgynous crops. It also brings back a unique opportunity to do a structured, pristine, 'done' style that defies effortlessness and still hits a trend note.

It's as perfect as a Stepford wife, as ice cool as Betty Draper, as vintage as yesteryear and as modern as tomorrow. On the runway at Jil Sander spring 2012 this sculpted faux bob, inspired by the '50s and '60s, was a defining part of the ladylike yet easy aesthetic. And with the right styling, the right attitude, Jil Sander made a 'done' do somehow feel miraculously cool and even, contrarily, effortless.

'In the true DNA of the brand, this is a rich woman's hairdo that looks almost so perfect, it has no period," explains Redken Creative Consultant Guido backstage at Jil Sander's show. "It could be from the future but also nods to the past. Â It's inspired by the 1950's but then becomes mid-century modern which makes it such a sculpted look."

In our shoot by photographer Kelly Defina, hairstylist Annika Bowen recreated the hairstyle on model Sophie Van Den Akker and, as always, was kind enough to share with us the steps she followed. To find out how to create the look for yourself, read the full step-by-step how to guide after the break.

Hair how to: sixties double French twist

On the spring 2012 runway of Diane von Furstenberg, models emerged with a back-combed crown that swirled back into two mirrored French twists. The effect? A 1960s style bouffant hairstyle that crowns any outfit with an elegant vintage vibe. For steps on how to create the style, read on.

Texture and touch

"Touch me", implores the title of this shoot starring Zuzana Straska. Of course we don't expect that the intention was anything too literal, as much as Emin Kadi's striking images do jump off the page. It's reference, we imagine, to the fact that Katie Burnett's styling flirts with tactility and texture.

From rough netting to supple silk, scrunched leather to thick blanketed wool, all of Kadi's images play to the touch of fabric against skin. Both he and Burnett know that fashion is about more than how clothes look - it's how they feel.
