Men’s 2012 hairstyles: hair trends, cuts & colors

Men’s hairstyles aren’t like women’s. Women’s hair trends are short lived, often lasting no more than a year. On the other hand, men’s hairstyle trends evolve slowly – and that’s the key to men’s hair trends in 2012. Each and every one of them has its roots in the hairstyles that were popular in 2010 and 2011, but each and every one of them also has evolved for 2012. Some have subtly evolved, others have split into several different hairstyles.

What’s the same, however, is that Fashionising.com is going to take you through each and every one of them. Below you’ll find a list of all of 2012′s key men’s hairstyles and haircuts. You can find a list of the key hair trends directly below, each with its own tutorial and styling insights. Below that you’ll find a full list of other hairstyles and haircuts for men in 2012.

As always, we’ll continue to update this guide with the latest looks and new tutorials through 2012.

Return of the undercut

Short back and sides.

If that’s an expression that you’re familiar with, then the odds are you a) grew up in a time when men only frequented barbers b) were raised by a man who falls into the previous category c) have had at least a half decent up bringing. Which more or less guarantees that it’s an expression that everyone reading this piece is familiar with. And yet, it’s an expression that doesn’t get used all that much anymore. As far as expressions go, it languishes in a corner of a disused room covered in only slightly more dust than (did we ever really say them) expressions such as manscaping and metrosexual. But dust be damned – you’re going to hear a lot more of short back and sides in the coming year. Your hair stylist is going to whisk scissors around your head and then do something that they probably haven’t done in a long time: they’ll ask permission to use clippers. Neigh, they’ll beg permission.

And why might that be?

To put none too fine a point on it (and to quote Peter Allen) “everything old is new again.”

The 70s are back for those with American tastes, the 60s are swinging again for those who prefer something from the other side of the Atlantic, and women are again working their way through the 50s though will none too soon start contemplating 1920s fashion for the second time in a few years. As for us guys, we’re already there. Courtesy of Don Draper we got our 60s revival before women did, and now we’re seeing that the 20s have already made their mark on 2012′s men’s haircuts – it’s one of those rare occasions where men’s fashion is ahead of women’s.

Brit-rock hairstyle: men’s hair trend for 2011 / 2012

There’s a men’s hairstyle that hasn’t left the catwalk in some time: the slightly tousled, slightly devil-may-care, forward sweeping men’s hairstyle. It’s been called many a thing, but with its Regency overtones and the fact that it continues to be favoured and interpreted by many a British indie band, it’s a hairstyle we’ve dubbed the Brit-rock hairstyle.

It’s also a hairstyle with enduring appeal and while we’ve been talking about it since 2009, we have to be clear that it has evolved. The ‘wet look’ of 2010, for instance, will look positively outdated in 2012 for instance.

Read on for more information about the men’s Brit rock hairstyle, including a how-to guide on how to wear this 2012 men’s hair trend.

Rockabilly hair: onwards and upwards

If style pundits were in any doubt as to the status of the rockabilly hair revival that has been gradually gaining momentum over the last two years, then the display of 1930s through 1950s-inspired retro hair at the menswear fashion shows over the past few years was the final proof they needed. Designers including the likes of Jil Sander and Thomas Maier at Bottega Veneta sent out model after model sporting playful quiffs accessorised with rockabilly string ties and greaser gear. The message was undeniable: rockabilly – specifically rockabilly hair – was back. And it remained the key vintage-revival, attitude laden hairstyle of 2010 and 2011.

2012′s fashion is here, however, and with it the status of rockabilly hair changes. But that’s not to say it’s out altogether. Anything but. In fact, with the 1950s having an influence upon spring 2012′s fashion this is one hairstyle that has ended up with relevance to both men and women and we can comfortably add it to the list of men’s 2012 hairstyles as well as women’s 2012 hairstyles.

In ’12 it’s the men’s quiff that counts

It started out with a hint of the extreme, with overtones of an attitude that said “I play a six string” and the Devil may care. But like so many things, the return of the quiff to popularity has eventually seen it evolve into something more refined. Scrap that. Refined is totally the wrong word. The style of quiff may have changed but this is still an attitude-infused hairstyle, it just happens to be a very different attitude. One where the six string doesn’t matter, the Devil doesn’t get a show in, and the look sits somewhere between the moody and the broody. Think James Dean and a desire to get laid and you’re on the right track.

So in 2012 the quiff deviates from something solely early-rock to include a variation that is a whole lot less Gene Vincent and a whole lot more Elvis. Yes, Elvis was probably of your parents’ generation, but a combination of hair and hip thrusting made him stand out and, as it stands as a 2012 men’s hairstyle, that’s precisely what the quiff is about: standing out with the hope of hip thrusting.

After the break we’ll take you through the two interpretations of 2012′s quiff, giving plenty of pictures, how tos and hints for the fashioniser who wants to make this hairstyle his own.

Karlie Kloss has a perfect body – and wants you to know it

Fashion and nudity are hardly strangers to one another. If you take the well-known quote, fashion is all about eventually becoming naked, then you might even say that nudity is the ying to fashion’s yang.

But the question is often less about if a model should take the nudity leap, and more about when – and above all how. For a model like Karlie Kloss – a model who has dominated the runways and magazine pages from a very young age – it’s a studied question. We follow such models. We see them grow up. We need to be ready to take the leap just as they do.

Mario Testino’s recent foray into shooting Kloss was sexualised and underwhelming, and we wondered what would come next. Thankfully, this is it.

The modern Gladstone bag

If ever you want to embarrass a woman, just ask her to list out the contents of her handbag. It's guaranteed that she'd have her entire life packed within the diameters of a few inches of leather.

Partially why, the idea of carrying a petite clutch frustrates most women. Especially when they're not attending an award function. The most analysed argument is that you can't stuff an extra pair of shoes, on-the-go toiletries kit, daily planner, seven-varieties of technological devices and a hundred million lip products in a clutch. You just cannot!

Taking these legitimate factors into consideration comes this trend report of an oversized, box-shaped Gladstone bag that has been modelling itself on celebrities' arms for quite some time. Over the years, the shapes and sizes have changed on a monthly basis, but just recently it's found to have stabilised itself and be classified as an accessory trend for 2012.

Whether you make it part of your strategically planned curated wardrobe or the contrary, the Gladstone bag holds a position stronger than what might be shunned for being just another statement accessory. Luxury brands have now placed this bag on the frontline of runway fashion.

Fashionising.com has sifted the best for you, only so that your accessory closet stays updated with the latest and the best. Read all about the history of the Gladstone bag (which also has another fancy name), its runway inspiration and styling tips right after the break.

Webcam antics

Our two leading ladies are bored. Or at least, they’re bored at the beginning of Matteo Bertolio’s clear-cut narrative. But if idle hands are the Devil’s plaything, the Internet is the 21st century medium for the message. It’s also stronger than a physical wall at keeping reality at bay. A tryst over wireless, even with someone in the next room, isn’t just more novel, it’s far less concrete. Our protagonists are happy to wake up alone, without the complexity of real togetherness; fun and fantasy the only things playing on their webcams and their minds.

Few photoshoots are so linear in their approach to story. I won’t go describing in detail Bertolio’s cheeky images of the two girls curing their boredom with the help of modern technology. That simply wouldn’t do them justice.

One white, three red

A white dress has so many variations. Even if you ignore the obvious bridal implications and summery beachwear, a white dress should make it into any girl’s wardrobe in one form or another.

And how many uses you get from it depends largely on how you accessorise. If you fear black ankle boots may be too heavy for a white dress, it’s time to reconsider. The two can be well acquainted, if not even friends.

This Zimmermann appliqué dress was paired with black boots and a trifecta of red splashes: a red YSL stone ring, red clutch and bright red lipstick.

Taking Bondi boardies abroad: an interview with Venroy

There are two types of designers in this industry: those who worship their customers and design solely for what they want, and others who design for themselves and take a risk for the popularity of the designs amongst the masses. This young Australian duo, from the label Venroy, fits in the latter category, and they're not ashamed of it. An Australian summer lifestyle has created much hype in the travel industry, but Venroy is determined to uplift the disdained image of Australian beachwear. Especially when it comes to everything unrelated to bikinis. This time, the men are here to do the talking. venroy mens swimwear

Dita Von Teese & Claudia Schiffer name dropped for LMFF

On the first day of December it's unlikely that you're focussed on much beyond Christmas and, perhaps, New Year's Eve. Not so in the fashion world, however. With shelves stocked and fingers crossed in the hope of a good Christmas for retailers, the industry en masse openly admits that it has turned its focus away from the remainder of the year and is instead focussed firmly on the first season of 2012. For designers and stores that means that spring 2012 look books are being released with frequency, and for fashion week organisers it means the long process of publicity can get firmly underway. Hence last night, on the first day of a summer that felt anything but, next year's LMFF (the Melbourne fashion festival) had its first of many kick-offs and some of the low-down on what is, at least in our eyes, Australia's best fashion week was given. lmff logo

Film inspired fashion: Dragon Tattoo does it better

Sometimes the costuming of a film influences fashion. A consequential by-product of the film in question, fans piece together versions of those costumes and adopt their style. They're inspired by a character; they want to become that character. David Fincher's soon to be released The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo does it knowingly. As I speculated when the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for H&M collection was first announced, the costuming looks to deviate from the way it's described in Stieg Larsson's books; and we can only guess there was some commercial drive to this. If George Lucas created the Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks with a nod towards selling toys, Dragon Tattoo, perhaps, let its costume be influenced by the fact that a generation of teens and twenty-somethings would walk away wanting to be Lisbeth Salander. h&m dragon tattoo
