Some call it an evening gown alternative, while others have tagged it as sophisticated glamour. Thanks to Yves Saint Laurent, who gave birth to le smoking in the 1960s, this androgynous ensemble has now become a womenswear classic and very much a wardrobe staple. But not one that is without the potential for reinterpretation. The women's tuxedo trend trumpet last blew out in 2008 when we saw a fountain of celebrities donning the look. Now, with 2012 on the horizon, we're seeing the trend make a flashing comeback with a whole lot of mischief, seduction and femininity - but this time it's different. It has evolved. Read on to see how to master this look and find out which pieces are worth investing in so you don't look like you're living 2008 all over again. Less of a costumed take and more of other 2011 and 2012 fashion trends reinterpreted with a jazz age twist. Elle Germany's shoot Golden Twenties pretty much nails the balance of masculine and feminine, the balance of vintage and modern. In an all white palette the flapper feel comes down largely to the accessories, while plunging necklines on draping dresses and blouses, wide legs on pants, and a luxe cream women's tuxedo jacket that perfectly epitomises the era's boy-meets-girl fascination are all pieces that can be styled outside of the era as well.

Often worn semi-sheer, or layered over a slip, few are fearless enough to wear a skirt that's as flimsy as a philanderer's promise and as see-through as a glass window on a sunny day - especially not with more than a pair of briefs underneath. But Anja Rubik proves it can be done, and done well. And the ingredients to her success, bar for the ridiculously long legs?

Here she gets it oh so right, spotted outside Elie Saab's fall 2011 couture show in a red dress that screams sex-bomb but with only the merest hint of skin. That hint is in the form of a high slit that balances out the otherwise full lengths of fabric. Meanwhile the gatherings and drapes on the centre of the dress pull in the waist and draw attention away from where its not wanted to where it most definitely is.

Occasionally they're plucked from the desolate lands of obscurity, but most often they're plucked off the international runway scene, handed a coveted contract to sign, and enlisted into a legion that will clutch to them for a career-long life of beach shoots and glittering runway spectacles. Most of these Angels will make some cross-overs back to high fashion from time to time, as if on temporary assignments back to earth, but rarely do they try and permanently leave the career heaven Victoria's Secret has created for them (unless of course they move onto even bigger things, like acting careers). Candice Swanepoel is an exception. She hit the big time first as a Victoria's Secret model but has ever since seemed intent on making that backwards transition from Angel heaven back to high fashion earth. She cast her way onto many a Paris runway last season from Dior to Givenchy. And now, in a move that truly cements her transition, she's fronting the latest Tom Ford ad campaign.

These are feats of beauty that you may never buy, may never even chance to borrow; and if you did find yourself wearing one it might be for one occasion only, kept sacred to those hours in which the dress' fabric swirled around your body and transformed you into someone else. Something else. A fairytale princess. A starlet from the golden age of Hollywood. A bride. Or just an extremely elegant, inappropriately dressed but drop-dead gorgeous siren. It doesn't matter which, the point is the transformative quality of an amazingly designed dress. And that, no matter if you wear them or not, it doesn't really matter - because a work of art is also there to be admired. So without further ado (and in no particular order) here are 10 gowns - 10 intricate, floor-length, yet utterly wearable gowns - from the resort 2012 collections that may just take your breath away. A model's purpose is to sell dreams and thus products. But if most models are sales tools then Lara Stone is a downright weapon. She has the kind of figure that can only be described as impossible, the kind that's ideal for selling lingerie. Don't Calvin Klein know it. Their 'Naked Glamour' range is simple and unexciting, so much so that using Lara Stone in the campaign is almost akin to cracking a walnut with a bulldozer. But on the other hand who else can make plain, nude underwear look so darn covetable?

This is pool side glamour that both covers up and reveals, that's both sporty and glamorous.

There was the profit downgrade, followed by a slump in the company's value on the Australian stock market, and then there was the social media attack directed against them that followed. The social media attack wasn't, however, directly related to their profit nor value downturns, but rather related to the comments from the company's CEO as to the root cause of David Jones' problems. In short, David Jones' CEO Paul Zahra shifted the blame of the problems from the company itself to the economic uncertainty in Australia. Of course, any Australian high street retailer doing it tough in the current market has more than the economy to blame: they suddenly have unprecedented competition courtesy of online retail; but the truth of the matter is that there is a down turn in consumer confidence in Australia, one that is impacting upon David Jones. Those behind the social media outcry were having none of it, and many took to Facebook and Twitter to vent their opinion (or anger, as it often seemed to be the case). Some comments were consumer focussed and cited poor service or high prices, others were politically motivated. What was most striking about the latter was the common language, the common rare phrases and names. While inconclusive, it did make the outcry appear to be a concentrated attack against the retailer in a very public forum. Campaigning against a retailer is nothing, but it's largely been an in-person activity. But with the growth of social media it's going to slowly transition online. So what should David Jones have done to respond? And what should other stores learn from it - after all, any retailer that has a large profile is one day going to be attacked as well.

It's a subtle influence; one that may not spring to mind when you gaze upon the ballerina-inspired floral maillots and pastel vintage inspired bikinis. But once acquainted with the collection's concept it suddenly makes more sense. Titled Pirouette, the collection explores the two female archetypes in film noir; "the trustworthy and loving woman and the dark and seductive femme fatale." So while the soft, floral pieces clearly dress the former, it's animal print bikinis and sheer ruched one pieces that give life to the latter.
