2013 hairstyles: 2013 haircuts & hair trends.

The hairstyles and haircuts we wear evolve with each passing year, just as the clothes we wear evolve. Following 2013′s fashion trends, it’s no big surprise that the most popular hair trends are the ones that are the most effortless: busy lifestyles and a desire for versatility puts complex hairstyles on the backburner, while classics with a twist prove the most popular weapons in our 2013 hairstyle arsenal.

That said, there’s no reason your 2013 haircut or 2013 hair colour can’t be bold or make a statement. The question, then, is what kind of statement you want to make.

After the break, the key 2013 hairstyles and 2013 hair trends that are shaping the year.

2013 hairstyles by season

Each season, the change in weather brings a change in fashion – and the hairstyles that accompany it. So while many hair trends will span the entire year, there will also be specific 2013 hairstyles that attach themselves to a particular season. Click through to our seasonal hair guides below for a whole range of 2013 hair how to guides and 2013 hair tutorials based on the runway looks of each season.

Spring 2013 hairstyles

The warm weather ushers in a mood of optimism and a desire for change, meaning the biggest hairstyles of 2013 get interpreted in a particular light that fits the season. From easy up-dos to chic braids, summery wet-look styles to textured evening hair, follow the link to our spring / summer 2013 hairstyles guide for plenty of how-tos and tutorials.

2013 haircuts

Thinking of getting a new haircut for 2013? Mid-Length hair will always be an option, but if you want to go for something bolder perhaps a short hair cut – or a very long one – will take your fancy. As far as short haircuts in 2013 go, the bob is the winner over anything cropped, while for those managing to grow it long hair is still as desirable as ever.

The bob.

bob hairstyle

Bob hairstyles

In 2013, bob hairstyles are making their mark. They’re sprouting up on model influencers – from Karlie Kloss to Edie Campbell and Aline Weber – appearing in chin length, fringed versions as well as longer bobs that brush the shoulders. The short hair cut of 2013, the bob is back in a versatile and modern way.

Long hair.

At the other end of the extreme when it comes to haircuts in 2013: ultra long hair. Away from the bob, this is the best way for a hair cut to make a big impact. The trend on the runways suggests a hair length that just reaches or covers the breasts, since the look hints at something a little mythological (think ancient goddesses and mermaids) – anything longer starts to cross over into medieval maiden territory and begins to lose its raw sex-appeal.

Very long hair in 2013 can be cut in two main ways: blunt, or layered. The truth is that either can work equally well. If your hair is straight and all one length, a blunt can will mean you can work both a straight, sleek look and a more textured one. If you have some shorter layers – especially through the front – you’ve still got the right foundations for an on-trend long hairstyle. Since a lot of runway looks use extensions to achieve the right length (meaning there will always be some shorter, natural layers showing through) and because the most on-trend styles for long hair are the ones with plenty of volume and texture, it doesn’t matter if your hair is cut with some layers.

That said, the long 2013 hair cut isn’t one you want to thin out too much – remember it’s best with volume and texture – so the most on-trend way to have it cut is with a few choppy layers, not completely layered all over.

Whether side parted, center-parted, curled or straight, it’s worth knowing a few basic textured hairstyles for long hair. Here are some to try:

textured side hair

Textured side part hair

Spotted on the runway at Calvin Klein, this spring 2013 hairstyle for long hair is textured without being too grungy or too messy. You can find out how to create this textured side part hair – which is great for either day or night – by following the link to our tutorial.
